“Never denied my blackness” – Tyla on how people mistake her identity
Grammy Award winner Tyla, was caught in the middle of a heated race dispute that culminated on “The Breakfast Club,” where she initially opted to not entertain questions about her race.
The controversy over Tyla’s race and ethnicity began when fans stumbled upon a TikTok video she had posted years prior before her song “Water” became a global hit.
“I’m both Coloured in South Africa and a black women,”
On Thursday evening, the Water hitmaker took to social media to give clarity on the matter. She said that in addition to being Zulu, she has Irish, Indian, and other ancestry in her veins.
She said in Mzansi she is referred to as “coloured,” but she is aware that in the United States that makes her Black, and she is okay with that.
”In Southa I would be classified as a Coloured woman and other places I would be classified as a black women. Race is classified differently in different parts of the world. I don’t expect to be identified as Coloured outside of Southa by anyone not comfortable doing so because i understand the weight of that word outside of SA, But to close this conversation, I’m both Coloured in South Africa and a black women,”
“As a woman for the culture. It’s and not or… with that being said ASAMBEEE,”
