Some exciting news for the autistic girlies, as Mattel has released its first-ever autistic Barbie doll in an effort to better represent how children with autism spectrum disorder may experience the world around them.
The unique doll was in development for more than a year, with guidance from the autistic community in partnership with the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network.
Barbie’s design team made intentional choices to ensure the doll feels authentic through its features and accessories.
“Barbie has always strived to reflect the world kids see and the possibilities they imagine, and we’re proud to introduce our first autistic Barbie as part of that ongoing work,” said Jamie Cygielman, Mattel’s global head of dolls, in a media statement.
She added that the new doll helps expand what inclusion looks like in the toy aisle and beyond, because every child deserves to see themselves in Barbie.
The autistic Barbie doll features flexible elbow and wrist joints that allow for stimming, hand flapping and other gestures some people with autism use to process sensory information or express excitement.
The doll’s gaze is also slightly shifted to the side, reflecting how some members of the autistic community may avoid direct eye contact.
It also comes with a pink finger clip fifget spinner, that spins to offer a sensory outlet that can help reducestress and improve focus.
Meanwhile, in South Africa, Mattel has partnered with media personality Nandi Madida and her daughter, Nefertiti Madida. Madida described the moment as a proud one for her family.
“So emotional and proud seeing my daughter, Nefertiti Madida, be part of the launch of the first-ever autistic Barbie doll @barbie. A powerful milestone in inclusive representation and a moment I will hold forever,” she said.
The new Barbie forms part of Mattel’s broader initiative to ensure more people can see themselves reflected in the iconic doll.
