Mattel has launched a new Barbie doll featuring Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).
This initiative seeks to reflect the diverse lived experiences of children worldwide and provide representation for those managing the chronic autoimmune condition.
T1D is a condition where the pancreas produces little to no insulin, necessitating insulin therapy and posing risks of various complications.
To ensure accuracy, Barbie collaborated with Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF), a leading research and advocacy organisation.
This partnership ensured the doll precisely portrays the medical equipment used by individuals with T1D, as well as an authentic overall look, including the design of her dress.
Beyond the new doll, Barbie is further championing T1D awareness by honoring two prominent global advocates: Peloton instructor Robin Arzón from the United States and model Lila Moss from the United Kingdom.
Both received their own unique, one-of-a-kind Barbie dolls in recognition of their efforts.
“After being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes a decade ago, I’ve found a lot of purpose in advocating for people with the condition and educating others about it because knowledge is power – especially for young minds,” commented Arzón, highlighting the significance of such representation for young individuals.
