Social media users were left speechless after a video of people burning money on a braai went viral over the weekend.
In this economy, with the cost of living hitting the majority of South African households, why anyone would choose to be so frivolous with their Rands is the question.
While some families struggle to put food on the table, others have no trouble setting fire to about R1000, on a braai stand.
Not only is it illegal to destroy the South African currency, but many social media users felt the video was insensitive.
“If they don’t need the money, could they not have given it to people who need it?”
“Their neighbours are going to bed hungry and they prefer to burn money.”
The video was posted by TikTok user Nqobani910, and there has since been a number of reactions to the money being braaied, with flabbergasted South Africans only able to shake their heads in disbelief.
SARB (South African Reserve Bank) issues a reminder that only the bank has the sole authority to produce, issue, and destroy South African currency.
