At the beginning of the year, veteran South African actor Carlos Radebe, better known as Duke on Backstage, revealed that he had fallen on hard times – pleading for an acting gig or any financial assistance.
Just the other day, Carlos shared that he’s been having a tough time finding work for the past few years and even shared his bank details for donations.
This plea raised concerns about the actor’s well-being. Radebe recently had a chat with Bongani Bingwa on 702, where he got real about his challenges.
An emotional Carlos Radebe revealed that his struggles began when Backstage ended almost two decades ago.
“It is so uncomfortable. I’m sorry for upsetting those who were upset.
People were saying I must get a job and what type of man I am,” he said. “I don’t pity myself.”
He also expressed his gratitude to ETV for all the support they’ve given him over the years. “They gave me a long run.”
Carlos blamed himself for not networking in the industry and assuming opportunities would come to him.
He advised up-and-coming actors to connect with others in the industry.
“Word to the young, you cannot be marooned on an island thinking your lucky stars are going to sparkle out of your head. We were taught to stay in touch and keep in contact.”
He added, “I feel embarrassed for myself. I found myself alone. After I lost my job I lost everything. I’ve been alone for the past 19 years.”
