Actor Hungani Ndlovu recently joined Skeem Saam as a recast for the character Tbose Maputla, previously played by Cornett Mamabolo. When Ndlovu initially took over the role, viewers had mixed reactions, but as the new season progressed, they began to warm up to his interpretation of the character.
In a candid video on his YouTube channel, The Ndlovus Uncut, the actor admitted to feeling nervous about replacing Mamabolo. Initially, he felt pressured to recreate the version of Tbose that Mamabolo had established, which added to his stress, especially considering they had handedness differences (Mamabolo being left-handed and Ndlovu being right-handed).
Eventually, Ndlovu decided to develop his own unique approach to the character. This shift in mindset has helped him find a sense of peace with the role. He believed that by creating something similar to the original portrayal, it would be more relatable to the audience than something completely different.
“I am happy with what I have offered because it definitely made people take a stand. You can’t watch and be like, ‘ake sure.’ Either you like it or you don’t. That’s art; it is subjective,” he said.
Hungani and his wife, Stephanie Ndlovu recently unveiled their first film Love Locked, which they shared with their fans on their YouTube channel.
Excited about their new venture, Hungani expressed that this move into film production is a direction they have always wanted to explore. While they will continue creating their regular videos, they also felt the need to evolve and define their brand in new and exciting ways.
“We have been trying to find a way to make the transitions and that’s not to say that we won’t be making these kinds of videos. It’s about growing and always defining the brand we want to define,” said Ndlovu.
