The countdown to South Africa’s biggest reality show Big Brother Mzansi has begun.

Season 5 of the hit show will launch on Sunday, 12 January 2025 and fans are excited to learn who will be the new housemates.

Newly announced host of Big Brother Mzansi season 5, Afrika Mdutyulwa aka Smash Afrika, recently spoke to Kaya 959 about what viewers can expect on the new season of the flagship show.

On ‘umlilo’ the theme for this season

The main theme for this year’s Big Brother Mzansi season is ‘umlilo’, which means fire in isiXhosa and isiZulu. The show promises to deliver the expected adrenaline-pumping excitement.

“The theme is ‘umlilo’ and as you know it means by fire or by force. So it’s all about the personalities and the challenges that Big Brother is going to put them through. Think about the drama that’s going to come from the housemates and let’s not forget about the tea that will be spilled from the live eviction show and the spice on games night. It’s all about raising the temperature,” said Smash Afrika.

On being a host of Big Brother Mzansi

“I got the call that I was going to be a host of Big Brother Mzansi on my birthday. I am honoured and can’t wait for it to start. So come the 12th of January 2025, the journey officially begins. I also can’t help but big up all the people who worked tirelessly behind the scenes and who have all shown me love, support, grace and a safe space to make this show a memorable experience. I am ready to turn the heat all the way up,” Smash Afrika added.

‘Biri Marung’ reaches platinum status

Smash Afrika also spoke about how Big Brother Mzansi is recognised for launching careers and how many previous competitors have gone on to become success stories while pursuing their dreams and goals.

“What I love most for every participant of the show, is that once you interact with the Big Brother Mzansi brand, you cannot come out the same way you entered. A guaranteed transformation is going to happen in everyone’s life. It’s also fascinating how it connects different generations who watch the contestants while they navigate 72 days of challenges. All the while missing their families in the name of the big prize money and for me the experience beat whether you win or loose the prize,” he said.

Tune into Mzansi Magic DStv channel 161 on Sunday, 12 January 2025 at 6PM to watch the show. Thereafter, viewers can watch the 24-hour channel on DStv channel 198.

    1. Definitions and Interpretation

    1.1.“Personal Information” means information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person and where it is applicable, identifiable, existing juristic person, including all information as defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013. 

    1.2  Parliament assented to POPIA on 19 November 2013. The commencement date of section 1, Part A of Chapter 5, section 112 and section 113 was 11 April 2014. The commencement date of the other sections was 1 July 2020 (with the exception of section 110 and 114(4). The President of South Africa has proclaimed the POPI commencement date to be 1 July 2020.

     
    1.3. “Processing” means the creation, generation, communication, storage, destruction of personal information as more fully defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.  

    1.4. “You” or the “user” means any person who accesses and browses this website for any purpose.
