The controversy over South African singer Tyla’s use of the term ‘coloured’ has gained new traction after Nigerian musician Tiwa Savage intervened, offering an apology for the young star’s comments.
Speaking on The Breakfast Club, Savage acknowledged the word’s status as a slur in America but defended Tyla, 23, believing her use of the term—which has a different, specific meaning in South Africa for people of mixed heritage—was innocent.

Savage said she understood the US reaction “because of the history behind that name,” but added, “I would like to say on behalf of her, we apologise… We did not mean it.”
Tyla previously tried to clarify the matter, explaining that while she is mixed-race and ‘coloured’ in South Africa, she identifies as a black woman elsewhere.
Despite her explanation, which stressed that “Race is classified differently in different parts of the world,” some American fans continue to criticise the singer, linking the ongoing controversy to her professional performance in the States.
