Award-winning actor Melusi Yeni has landed a lead role in the new SABC 1 telenovela Amalanga Awafani.
According to reports, the upcoming telenovela comes from the creators of Uzalo and will air weekdays at 6:30PM, taking over Skeem Saam’s old slot.

The gripping series is set in the rural town of Umzinyathi and delves into the life-altering consequences of sudden wealth.
It tells the story of twins, Sabelo and Thembi Gumede (played by Nonsikelelo Mthiyane and Fanele Zulu), who find a winning lotto ticket and are thrust into a world of luxury, opportunity and unexpected challenges.
Yeni (47) plays the role of their father, Gumede, who hasn’t played a significant role in their upbringing.
Drum says years ago Gumede abandoned his first wife, the mother of his twins, and now that he’s a polygamist he must decide whether to return to his first family or remain with his second wife.
According to the SABC, the series aims to explore the millennial experience through a socio-economic lens, and delves into youth culture, ambition, the pressures of financial responsibility, and the shifting dynamics of relationships when money is introduced into the equation.
Born in KwaMashu, Durban, Melusi first rose to fame when he played Phenyo in the popular SABC 1 soapie Generations.
He previously made headlines for his hospitalisation due to poor health and failure to pay child support amounting to R1million over 18 years to the mother of his first child.
Melusi made his big comeback in 2022 and has since starred in numerous productions including Smoke & Mirrors and Sibongile & The Dlamini’s to name a few.
Amalanga Awafani starts on Monday, 28 April at 6:30PM.
