Veteran South African award-winning actor, Don Mlangeni Nawa, has died. He was 65 years old.
His family confirmed his passing in an official press statement on Wednesday, 16 April 2025.
“It is with deep heartbreak that we share the passing of beloved father, Don Mlangeni Nawa, on 16 April 2025.
“He was the heart of our family – a loving father, brother, and friend. To the world, he was a gifted and respected actor whose presence lit up every stage and screen he graced. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the stories he told, and the love he gave so freely.
“We are deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support. We kindly ask for privacy as we grieve this immense loss,” the statement reads.
Born in Boksburg, Gauteng in 1959, Mlangeni kicked off his acting career in theatre.
Some of his most popular vintage television roles include Laqhasha in the SABC TV series ‘Sgudi ‘Snaysi, Zakhe Mhlongo in Hlala Kwabafileyo and Zebedee Matabane in Isidingo, a role which he played for a whopping 16 years.
Most recently, Mlangeni Nawa starred in The River, Shaka Ilembe and in the Netflix series Savage Beauty to name a few.
In 2006, he was awarded the South African Film and Television Award (Golden Horn) for Best Actor in a TV Soap, and in 2018, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Royalty Soapie Awards.
Tributes have poured in via the comments section of his Instagram account with former Scandal! actress Masasa Mbangeni saying, “Rest in peace Bab’ Don. The kindest , calmest and funniest man I ever got a chance to meet with a heart of solid gold. Thank you for all you did to try make this industry better. Your efforts will never be forgotten. Enkosi Tata. Rest well”
Businesswoman Carol Bouwer wrote, “May his beautiful soul rest in glory! So sad to read this.”
Actress Nthati Moshesh exclaimed in shock and said, “Bathong bra Don”
The Nawa family says details regarding the memorial and funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.
According to reports, Mlangeni Nawa leaves behind his wife and five children.
