Executive Mayor of Emalahleni Local Municipality, Linah Malatjie has died after a fatal car crash.
The mayor and her husband were involved in a head-on collision at 21h30 on Sunday evening. Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula confirmed the news in a statement to media on Monday, 3 January.
The collision occurred on the R544 between Gemsbokspruit and Verena, Mpumalanga.
Mayor Malatjie and her husband were admitted to hospital but unfortunately succumbed to their injuries. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash died on the scene.

Minister Mbalula called for motorists to adhere to the rules of the road and to be more responsible.
“This is yet another tragic passing on our roads since the start of the festive season. As we head back to our places of work, I urge all South Africans to be on high alert and observe all the rules of the road.”
More than 820 South Africans have lost their lives on the country’s roads during the festive season.
Minibus taxis, light delivery vehicles and trucks were predominantly involved in most road fatalities to date.
Almost 2,700 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, excessive speeding and driving without a license.
