The Department of Basic Education is calling for an investigation after a pupil died after a drowning incident in the Eastern Cape.
According to the department, the 15-year-old from Xolani High School passed away while taking part in an activity organized by Equal Education.
It’s understood the learner was part of a group of 30 students who were swimming at the Palm Springs Holiday Resort, near East London.
They were reportedly participating in an annual leadership camp.

Psychologists sent to school
Department spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says it’s concerned that Equal Education has not said anything about the incident.
Mhlanga says they have sent psychologists to the school to offer support.
“The department is concerned that the matter has gone on for so long without any information coming forth, especially when it comes to the reporting, which took long to reach the department…
“We feel that a full investigation s required.”
