As women, we put so much pressure on ourselves when it comes to our weight. It is okay to maintain a healthy lifestyle and take care of our bodies but we often obsess about having the perfect body that it leads to an eating disorder without you realising it.
Eating disorders are abnormal eating habits that can threaten your health or even your life. The most common forms of eating disorders include Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating disorder.
Anorexia Nervosa: A person believes they’re fat even when they are gravely thin and restrict their eating to a point of starvation.
Bulimia Nervosa: A person eats excessive amounts of food , then purges by making themselves vomit or using laxatives.
Binge Eating: A person has out-of-control eating patterns, but don’t purge. Comfort eating can also trigger bingeing. Some people cannot express their emotions so they self-medicate with food instead of dealing with their feelings .
Treatment for an eating disorder usually consists of one or more of the following and dealt with by medical doctors, nutritionists, and therapists for complete care.
Therapy can be helpful in addressing the underlying causes of eating disorders. Therapy is a fundamental part of treatment because it gives the individual an opportunity to address and heal from what they may be avoiding dealing with and learn healthier coping mechanisms.
The highest concern in treatment of an eating disorder is addressing any health issues that may have been caused by disordered eating behaviour.
Guidance for normal eating, and the integration of an individualised eating plan to help the individual to have a better relationship with food.
Some medications may be needed for mood or anxiety symptoms that can occur with an eating disorder.
Here is some signs and symptoms of an eating disorder:
- Chronic dieting despite being gravely thin
- Constant weight fluctuations
- Obsession with calories and fat contents of food
- Depression or going through a lethargic stage
- Isolation from family and friends.
