Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize says there is still no need for South Africans to panic over the new COVID-19 variant.
The strain is currently wreaking havoc in India where it was first discovered with over 300,000 cases being recorded daily.
Mkhize says track and tracing teams haven’t found anyone coming to South Africa from India with the new strain.
He says officials will continue to monitor the situation.
Increase in COVID-19 cases a concern
Mkhize says the significant rise in COVID-19 infection numbers is a cause for concern.
He says the current trend needs to be monitored closely.
His views come as more than 2,000 new coronavirus infections were confirmed in the last 24 hours.
Similar figures were seen in the previous report and Mkhize says this should be taken as a serious warning.
The South African Medical Research Council says its important for everyone to continue observing health regulations.
Professor Glenda Gray says South African’s should increase efforts to avoid going into a third wave.
To date, there has been 54,620 COVID-19 related deaths and 1,59-million cases.
