Could you survive a day without your smartphone? That was the topic on Kaya Drive on Monday afternoon and judging by the tweets and callers, it’s a no.
We seem so reliant on our phones that it can be hard to imagine going even an hour without them. A smartphone can do absolutely everything from helping us navigate between places, allowing us to make bank transactions, and providing us with a million different ways to keep in touch with our friends and family. And did we mention the endless selfies!
One Kaya Drive fan said: “I just love my phone, no other reasons. I just have to have my phone with me all the time. I live with my kids, so I don’t have to be stressing about a jealous man. I’m married to my phone.”
Kgomotso Meso asked the team if they could go without their phones and with some giggles, it was a big no.
However, there are some benefits to having a phone-free day.
A smartphone can be a form of entertainment for us even on occasions where our attention should be elsewhere, like when we go on dinner dates with our loved ones. It can get extremely difficult for us to connect with each other. Going a day without this device can be an incredible opportunity to increase your concentration levels and help you connect in real-time with people.
If you leave your smartphone at home, you will have:
Fewer distractions
When you leave your phone at home you will have fewer distractions and concentrate on your tasks at hand. With work-life balance being uncommon these days, we may actually be able to leave a little bit of work at the office for even just a short while by staying away from our phones.
Peace and quiet
The peace we encounter without our devices gives us a chance to appreciate the morning breeze and have our time without distractions. We can recharge without feeling like we’re being pulled in so many directions.
A real connection with people
A real connection with people, having conversations that are not interrupted by an Instagram notification or the need to take a Snapchat picture to post. Events and a night out with a loved one have turned into events that are experienced in silence as everyone is glued on their phones. Cherish the memories you create with people who will always beat any reel video on Instagram.
Amplified senses
Without your phone, you are able to be present and alert at all times. And you will be able to hear the beautiful laughter of babies in the mall or the great conversations you may have with your loved ones.
Few people knowing about your whereabouts
You will have no urge to share your every move with your followers. Or share your favorite salad from your local restaurant, with this you remain a mystery and there will be lots more conversations that are sparked as people know nothing about you.
