Cash-strapped residents have until 31 May 2024 to make arrangements with the City of Johannesburg (JHB) for their municipal debt downpayment to be reduced to just 10%.
The City said the arrangement is in place to help relieve households from financial distress.
Director of Customer Communications at the City, Kgamanyane Maphologela said the arrangement will apply to residential customers who are struggling to keep up with their monthly municipal bills.
“Previously the City required residential customers to put forward a 30% downpayment on the outstanding debt to qualify for a payment arrangment.
The City is mindful of enormous financial pressures many households are facing.
This is but one of the city’s many interventions oftrying to assist our customers and be a caring municipality.
The City is committed to assist residents in keeping their rates and utility accounts up to date.”

The 10% debt downpayment arrangement means that a resident who owes the City R100 000 for municipal services, will now only pay R10 000 deposit and make payment arrangement without any questions asked.
Maphologela encourages all eligible customers to take advantage of the offer which will only be available until 31 May.
