On what would have been the 38th birthday of the late South African rap titan Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, his mother, Lynn Forbes, has shared reflections on the enduring nature of loss and the surprising scale of her son’s cultural impact.
It has been nearly three years since the high-profile artist was killed, a tragedy that continues to resonate across the continent and beyond.
For his family and the “Megacy” his devoted fanbase, the anniversary remains a bittersweet milestone, balancing the celebration of his life against the stark reality of his absence.
Speaking on the lessons she has garnered since the tragedy, the podcaster and mother explained that her experience of mourning has shifted significantly over time.
“I’ve learnt that grief doesn’t move in a straight line,” she remarked. “In the beginning, everything is shock and survival. Later, the layers deepen. You start to understand the true magnitude of the absence, not just in big moments but in everyday life.”
While she knew him as a son, the years following his death have provided Lynn with a broader perspective on AKA’s influence. She noted that the outpouring of affection from the public has helped her grasp the true extent of his reach.
“I’ve also learned how much love he carried in this country,” she said. “The stories people still share, the music that still lives, the way strangers speak about him. It has taught me that his impact went far beyond what I saw as his mother.”
