“Another casualty of 2020. Thank you to all the fans and awesome team behind Queen Sono for the magic.”Kagiso Lediga on Twitter
At the end of last year South African fans of the hit Netflix pilot series Queen Sono, got the sad news that the streaming platform would not be bringing Season 2 to screens. Starring Pearl Thusi who’s enigmatic character plays a spy, the show quickly gained international attention and popularity.
With a 91% review on Rotten Tomatoes, the show was created and directed by Kagiso Lediga. News of the cancellation did not make sense to fans who lapped up the series hungrily, taking their battle to have Queen Sono return for Season 2 online. A petition calling for Netflix to rethink their decision is doing the rounds, and Pearl shared the link on her social media personally.

Season 1 left fans in suspense drooling for more, with cliff-hangers that pointed to the incomplete plots continuing in Season 2. Lediga issued a media statement attributing the show’s cancellation to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Another casualty of COVID-19
“We have written a beautiful story which cannot be executed due to the pandemic we’re facing,” Lediga wrote on Twitter.
Who knows if the petition to #BringBackQueenSono will hold any weight with the streaming platform? The fact that Pearl took to social media to share the petition link must indicate that she too is equally as gutted at the decision to cancel the show.
Pearl expressed her gratitude to fans in a statement from Netflix, “It’s incredible that we, as a team got a lifetime opportunity to make history together, as there will never be another ‘first’ African Netflix original series.”
