South Africans are in shock following reports that Eugene Mthethwa, a member of the legendary Kwaito group Trompies reportedly received R5.43 in royalties this year.
City Press reports that Eugene Mthethwa shared his statement from Samro on Friday, 16 September 2022, showing his earnings.
The musician received amounts ranging from 34c to R1.28 in 2021.
These were for Trompies’ popular hits such as Umgidi and Sigiya Ngengoma.
His cry comes a week after SAMRO revealed that it distributed 13 million in accumulated royalties since April 2021 following an initiative to reach out to members to update their banking details who had royalties due to them.
Mthethwa says he’s been receiving that amount each year and is challenging the organization to reveal a list of their top 20 earners
“I know what they mean when they talk about the R13 million, and I challenge them to come out publicly with a list of their top 20 earners.”
