This month, Kaya 959 invites listeners to tune in for a month of exceptional music and masterclasses as part of Jazzuary 2021 which will stream exclusively on Jazzuary.FM – Kaya’s online 24/7 jazz focus offering.
Taking inspiration from Mile Davis’ groundbreaking album Birth of the Cool, a record that inspired generations of musicians, this year, Jazzuary’s theme is Rebirth of School. Working within an exceptional local jazz scene, South African jazz musicians and practitioners have a lot to teach us about our history, improvisation, innovation and more. We are excited to bring together well-versed experts who will share a range of academic, cultural and social perspectives on the genre. Some of this year’s masters include musician Ziza Muftic, who joins us again with a vocal masterclass. Writer Ntombizikhona Valela will speak on the importance of jazz and overlooked histories, and filmmaker Sifiso Khanyile gives us insight into music’s role in his documentary-making process.
“Investing in music education is important in building a healthy society. The theme promotes ways in which music can build self-esteem in our abilities and in the ability to inspire others, especially the youth. Creating art is the highest form of self-expression. As Confucius said: ‘If one should desire to know whether a kingdom is well governed if its morals are good or bad, the quality of its music will furnish the answer.'” – Brenda Sisane, host of the Art of Sunday.
“For the first time in its history at Kaya 959, the annual reflection and celebration of Jazzuary will exclusively be on our digital platform Jazzuary.FM. Throughout January our listeners can enjoy regular programming on-air while also having the option of visiting Jazzuary.FM for more in-depth jazz content. The last year has shown all of us the potential of digital content, and we are excited to be focusing our efforts here.” – Ncebakazi Manzi, Programming Manager.
Join us as we learn from the best that South African jazz has to offer on www.jazzuary.fm. Listeners can also enjoy elements of Jazzuary 2021 every Sunday on the following shows: Sunday Evergreens with Colin Kgari (06:00-10:00), The Art of Sunday with Brenda Sisane (10:00-14:00) and The World Show with Nicky B (18:00-22:00).
