Would the real South African music please stand up

Whether it was coded with messages of the anti-apartheid struggle or an evolution of a proudly South African genre and style of music to fit what was happening in the world. During the decade of 1996 – 2006, South African music enjoyed its debutante phase and was still being led by the youth of the day. As we passed the […]

A decade in music: bubblegum pop music

By Nomali Cele We were slow to catch on: the 1980s kicked in a little late in the South African music scene. But while the aesthetic of the 1980s music industry (distinct fashion, bad hair decisions, groovy and boppy music) slowly seeped into the South African music industry, another change was taking place. Four booming African industries

By Nomali Cele Gone are the days of “the dark continent” which Africa never was, to begin with. These days, Africans are building and growing their countries and with each other, even in the face of setbacks that include slow development and tough financial times. What Africa needs is investors – who don’t always have to be from the West or the East – to believe in the future we […]

By Nomali Cele What You Can Learn from The Please Call Me Vodacom Case After a nearly 15-year-long battle, Nkosana Kenneth Makate won his claim against telecommunications giant Vodacom. But he did so not without exhausting all the legal arenas in the country first. Makate’s victory was handed down by the highest court in the land, the Constitutional Court, last month.
