With the price of petrol hitting a record high of R17, 39 a litre this Wednesday, many motorists are feeling the pinch. Kaya Drive with Sizwe Dhlomo asked listeners what advice they have for motorists who are asked for a lift.
It’s a situation most find themselves in at some point, whether your car is in for repairs or you’re just strapped for cash, there are times you just have to call in a favour.
In these hard times, do you offer to compensate your friend, colleague or family member for giving you a lift?
Here’s what the Kaya Drive had to say:

Most of the Kaya Drive listeners who responded said they wouldn’t mind giving someone a lift provided they were heading in the same direction and not putting themselves out of the way.
Some expected at least the same amount the person would pay in public transport or half the costs if it’s a regular arrangement. A lift club for example would not be done without payment because it becomes a daily expense.

Advice for people asking for a lift:
- If you are asking someone to either pick you up or drop you off and your route is going to put them out of their regular route, offer to compensate them.
- Even if the person doesn’t ask for compensation, the polite thing to do is to offer to cover part of the costs out of courtesy.
- Don’t take advantage of the person’s kindness and demand they pick you up and drop you off at a certain time.
- If the person doesn’t want to accept money, offer to take their car to the carwash or to stop at the garage to fill up some petrol instead.
- Get the person a voucher or gift card. If they’re giving you a lift as a gesture of kindness, reciprocate in some way.
