The Department of Basic Education has cancelled the mid-year examinations for Grade 12 learners to allow them time to cover the curriculum.
Minister Angie Motshekga made the announcement during a presentation to the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education about the impact of COVID-19 on education.
“We want to make up for the loss of time and for them to cover the curriculum. They did not go on holiday in March and most of the schools are giving extra classes. The [usual] June period of exams will be used to cover the curriculum. We also have a team monitoring Covid-19 infections on a daily basis,” Motshekga was quoted as saying.
The Minister’s decision was based on this year’s Grade 12 learners only returning back to school in July, amounting to 60% of the academic year being lost.
The department of education issued a separate statement detailing that this year’s Grade 12’s are facing an unusual predicament because many did not finish the syllabus for 2020 and the 2021 school year is off to a late start.
The decision to cancel mid-year exams for Grade 12 learners comes after the Minister gazetted that Grades R to 7 are to return to daily school attendance from 26 June.
