Former trade unionist, Dr James Motlatsi, says South Africa’ newly-elected President is not a position monger. an interview with David O’Sullivan on Breakfast with David on Kaya 959, Motlatsi, who formed the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) with Ramaphosa and others, said Nelson Mandela took South Africa out of apartheid and Ramaphosa was the one to take this country out of state capture, corruption and maladministration.
He was speaking following a State of the Nation Address and announcement that Ramaphosa would intervene in the Mining Charter. Motlatsi, who felt Ramaphosa was tired of the way in which the mining industry had been dealt with in the country under Minerals Resources Minister, said it was only a matter of hours before a new minister was appointed

During his inaugural state of the nation address, Ramaphosa said the government will intensify engagements with all stakeholders on the Mining Charter to ensure that it is truly an effective instrument to sustainably transform the face of mining in South Africa. Ramaphosa said mining had a potential for growth and job creation.
While some celebrated the halting of the controversial mining charter, Louis Snyman, who is an attorney at Wits University’s Centre for Applied Legal Studies representing the affected mining communities, has cautioned the Mining Chamber of making the decision without consulting the affected mining communities. Snyman says there is a for the court to declare that mining-affected communities are key stakeholders in mining decision- and policy-making.
