President Ramaphosa’s inaugural State of the Nation Address was not just about government programmes of action for the year. The address, which shall now be remembered as the “Thuma Mina” speech after the president concluded the famous Hugh Masekela song, will also be remembered for the bold government officials who walked the red carpet with their partners posing for the cameras as photo journalists shouted, “Stand on the centre of the red carpet!” “We want to take a picture of you alone!” and “kiss!” as Mandla Mandela and wife Nosekeni Rabia Mandela walked the red carpet. The State of the Nation Address was not without fan fair and spectacle of members of parliament and their spouses walking the red carpet dressed to kill.
And then there was the controversial criminal Mduduzi Manana who remains a member of parliament even after admitting in a court of law that he assaulted two women in 2017

President Cyril Ramaphosa drove up in a black Mercedes Benz van, much like the white one President Jacob Zuma used while he was in office. Current finance minister Malusi Gigaba walked hand in hand with his wife. Reports are that Gigaba might be replaced by former ANC Treasurer General Zweli Mkhize in a cabinet reshuffle.
Police Minister Fikile Mbalula and wife Nozuko walked the red carpet hand in hand, for a moment forgetting that he might not be a minister under new President Cyril Ramaphosa. Mbalula had made it clear that is a staunch supporter of Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma in the build-up to the ANC’s 54th National Congress.
Dr Nkosana Dlamini Zuma, who has recently tweeted that she is not tired of politics, also walked the red carpet. I’m sure whether she was sad or that’s how she is usually. She did indulge the photographers with a twirl and a wave before she walked off.
