How Gauteng founder Kutlwano Kgoebane built The Dog Broker to stamp out online scams, eliminate puppy mills, and safely connect South African families with their ideal pups.

Searching for a puppy online can feel like navigating a maze of empty promises and outright scams.

But for Gauteng-based entrepreneur Kutlwano Kgoebane, a moment of deep personal grief and subsequent online frustration ignited a mission to make finding a family pet safe, ethical, and joyful.

Kutlwano lost her dog in December 2020 due to a hidden breeding-related health issue. When she tried searching for a new pup two months later, she almost fell for two separate online scams in less than an hour.

“I nearly got scammed twice within the space of an hour,” Kutlwano recalls.

“I thought this was ridiculous people shouldn’t go through that when opening their hearts to a pet. I realised I couldn’t curb scammers single-handedly, but I could build a platform people could genuinely trust.”

In February 2021, she launched The Dog Broker.

Operating entirely online with nationwide delivery, the service acts as a high-trust pet concierge, connecting families with healthy, purebred puppies without the fear of fake listings or shady operations.

Sourcing with a conscience

Instead of a physical storefront, puppies remain in the care of vetted breeders until they are ready for their new homes.

Over five years in the industry, Kutlwano has cultivated a tight-knit, referral-based network of ethical breeders.

Though her delivery reaches nationwide, Kutlwano focuses her breeder partnerships primarily in Gauteng so she can inspect living conditions firsthand:

  • Strict anti-puppy-mill policy: She refuses to work with high-volume operations breeding multiple breeds purely for profit.
  • Maternal welfare: She ensures mother dogs are not overworked, enforcing strict limits on litters per year.
  • Environmental health: Premises are checked for cleanliness and proper care standards that support healthy development.

“For me, it’s about protecting both the animals and the families,” she explains.

“When people see that they are dealing with an actual person who personally checks in on the conditions, it strips away the anxiety.”

From viral moments to global vision

Trust is hard-won online, but Kutlwano’s insistence on putting a face to the brand paid off. A major turning point arrived in late 2021 when media personality Lamiez Holworthy bought a puppy through the platform and shared photos of Kutlwano’s home delivery.

Today, Instagram drives 80% to 90% of her business, where clients appreciate transparent pricing and genuine human connection. Balancing a corporate career with running the enterprise, Kutlwano still personally handles weekend deliveries whenever possible.

Recently completing her MBA, Kutlwano is far from done. She is currently building a broader pet-services platform and preparing for international export across Africa and Dubai.

“This journey has always been about reinforcing credibility in a space that severely lacked it,” Kutlwano says.

“Every happy handover reminds me why I started.”
