- Tshwane residents have been urged to take precautions following a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms on Monday, 7 September 2026.
- The storms are expected from the afternoon until midnight and could bring heavy downpours, large amounts of hail, damaging winds and excessive lightning.
- Residents have been advised to remain indoors where possible and avoid outdoor activities during the storm.
Tshwane residents have been urged to take precautions following a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms issued for Monday, 7 September 2026.
Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit the capital city from the afternoon through to midnight.
The City of Tshwane warns that the storms could bring heavy downpours, large hail, damaging winds, and excessive lightning.
Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Nana Radebe-Kgiba says motorists should exercise extreme caution, as poor visibility and slippery roads could increase the risk of accidents.
Residents have been urged to take the following safety precautions:
- Stay indoors where possible and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
- Stay away from metal objects and structures that can conduct electricity, including barbed-wire fences and power lines, which may be struck by lightning.
- Avoid outdoor activities such as fishing and playing golf during thunderstorms, as fishing rods and golf clubs can increase the risk of lightning strikes.
- Motorists should reduce their speed, switch on their headlights and maintain a safe following distance in poor visibility.
- Avoid driving through flooded roads or areas where water is flowing rapidly.
The City is urging residents to remain vigilant and monitor weather updates as the severe conditions move across Gauteng.
