- Johannesburg motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution as persistent rainfall and localised flooding affect several areas across the city.
- Multiple vehicles became submerged on Siemert Road and Currey Street in Doornfontein on Sunday, prompting JMPD officers to divert traffic.
- Motorists have been advised to avoid flooded roads, reduce their speed and follow instructions from traffic officers.
Johannesburg motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution as persistent rainfall, wet road surfaces and localised flooding create hazardous conditions across the city.
This comes as weather forecasters continue to warn of a high probability of rainfall across Gauteng.
On Sunday, 06 September 2026, localised flooding was reported at Siemert Road and Currey Street in Doornfontein, where multiple vehicles became submerged and stranded in high water.
Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla says officers are on the scene managing traffic and assisting stranded motorists.
“JMPD officers are on scene managing traffic flow, assisting stranded motorists, and actively diverting vehicles away from the flooded road.
“Motorists heading toward these locations are being diverted onto alternative routes. Avoid the area entirely where possible,” said Fihla.
Fihla has urged motorists who encounter submerged roads or standing water to turn around immediately.
He warned that stalled vehicles can obstruct emergency response teams and create serious safety risks for motorists and other road users.
Motorists are advised to:
- Drive well below the speed limit.
- Maintain an extended following distance.
- Keep their headlights switched on.
- Avoid driving through flooded roads or standing water.
- Follow temporary barricades and road closures.
- Follow instructions from JMPD officers directing traffic at affected locations.
Authorities are urging motorists to remain vigilant and to consider alternative routes where flooding has been reported.
