  • The businessman is expected to appear in court on Wednesday, while the allegations against him and those implicated in the alleged hit squads remain subject to investigation.

A prominent KwaZulu-Natal businessman has been arrested on allegations of kidnapping and human trafficking.

The businessman, whose name has previously featured in investigations into alleged corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the criminal justice system, was arrested at his home in Umhlanga on Tuesday night, 11 August 2026.

His arrest comes after his name was mentioned during the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating allegations of corruption and criminality within the police and criminal justice system.

His name was also raised during proceedings of the SAPS ad hoc committee in Parliament.

The suspect is expected to appear in court on Wednesday, 12 August 2026. His identity is expected to be formally confirmed when he appears before the court.

Meanwhile, the Madlanga Commission is hearing from a new witness on Wednesday as it shifts its focus to alleged hit squads operating in KwaZulu-Natal.

The alleged squads are reportedly made up of the South African Police Service (SAPS) members accused of carrying out extrajudicial killings.

According to allegations before the commission, the squads target suspects linked to cash-in-transit robberies, taxi operators and drug syndicates while operating under the guise of a task team.

Members of the alleged squad, which has implicated KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, are reportedly paid R20,000 a month in cash to carry out the killings.

The latest evidence forms part of the broader investigation by the Madlanga Commission into allegations of corruption, criminality and abuse of power within South Africa’s law enforcement and criminal justice systems.
