South African national football team coach Hugo Broos has officially stepped down from his role as Bafana Bafana coach.

The announcement was made by the South African Football Association (SAFA) on Friday, 31 July 2026.

Broos spent five years with Bafana Bafana and played a key role in the team’s resurgence, including helping the national team secure a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

SAFA also hailed the fact that during Broos’ tenure, Bafana Bafana qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 24 years.

The team made history at the 2026 global tournament by reaching the second round of the competition for the first time ever after defeating South Korea 1-0 in Monterrey, Mexico, through a goal from Thapelo Maseko.

SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan thanked the Belgian coach for the impact he had on the national team.

“We have established a very, very good team, and we want to thank you for that, that South Africa now is among the top ten best teams on the continent, and we have a team that can compete.

Of course, it’s a huge challenge for us as we part ways and have to find a new driver for the team, and we have a difficult challenge to qualify again for the Africa Cup of Nations. We’ve become used to qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations now,” said Jordaan.

Jordaan added that SAFA hopes Bafana Bafana will continue building on the success achieved under Broos.

Broos explained that his decision to leave was influenced by the time he has spent away from his family.

“My long absence from my family and lonely moments in South Africa have led me to make this difficult decision. Qualifying for the World Cup 40 years after my participation at the World Cup in 1986 as a player with the Belgian national team brought things full circle,” he said.

Broos will return home to Belgium on Saturday, 01 August 2026.

    • regulate, in harmony with international standards, the processing of personal information by public and private bodies in a manner that gives effect to the right to privacy subject to justifiable limitations that are aimed at protecting other rights and important interests,
    1. Definitions and Interpretation

    1.1.“Personal Information” means information relating to an identifiable, living, natural person and where it is applicable, identifiable, existing juristic person, including all information as defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013. 

    1.2  Parliament assented to POPIA on 19 November 2013. The commencement date of section 1, Part A of Chapter 5, section 112 and section 113 was 11 April 2014. The commencement date of the other sections was 1 July 2020 (with the exception of section 110 and 114(4). The President of South Africa has proclaimed the POPI commencement date to be 1 July 2020.

     
    1.3. “Processing” means the creation, generation, communication, storage, destruction of personal information as more fully defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.  

    1.4. “You” or the “user” means any person who accesses and browses this website for any purpose.

    3.2.5. KAYA 959 will not disclose any personal information relating to you to any third party unless your prior written agreement is obtained or KAYA 959 is required to do so by law. 

    3.2.6. If personal information is released with your consent KAYA 959 will retain a record of the information released, the third party to which it was released, the reason for the release and the date of release, for a period of 1 (one) year from the date on which it was last used. 

    3.2.7. KAYA 959 will destroy or delete any personal information that is no longer needed by KAYA 959 for the purpose it was initially collected, or subsequently processed. 

    3.3. Note that, as permitted by the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002, KAYA 959 may use personal information collected to compile profiles for statistical purposes. No information contained in the profiles or statistics will be able to be linked to any specific user.
