Cape Town police have opened an inquest into the death of a 25-year-old South African midfielder, Jayden Adams.
His death was confirmed by his family and club, Mamelodi Sundowns, on Saturday, 11 July 2026.
Details surrounding his death remain unclear as his family and police await the results of a post-mortem examination.
Although an inquest has been opened, Cape Town police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said there is no suspicion of foul play.
The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder recently represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Tributes have poured in from around the world, with moments of silence observed during the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.
His family and partner now face an agonising wait for the post-mortem results, which are expected to determine the cause of his death.
Speaking on behalf of the bereaved family, Jayden’s father, Juanito Adams, shared the family’s immense struggle to come to terms with the untimely loss.
“As you all know, it was an untimely death. The family is struggling to process it. It won’t be easy to carry on. People say it will become easier, but it won’t. You just learn to live with it.”
Authorities have appealed to the public to refrain from unverified speculation as the football world mourns a gifted young player whose life and promising career were cut tragically short.
