South Africans now have other options to get immunized against COVID-19 as the Pfizer vaccine will be available at two private pharmacies from this month.
With two of the countries biggest private pharmacies acquiring the rights to administer the vaccines across multiple branches within their groups.
What’s more, is that while there may be a minimal administrative fee of approximately R70, the Department of Health has announced that the costs will be covered by either medical schemes or the state.
The rollout at Dis-Chem will commence from 24 May at 11 sites as part of Phase 2 of government’s rollout plan to vaccinate people over 60, people with comorbidities, and essential workers.
The vaccines will then be available at the 280 clinics under the Dis-Chem umbrella.
On Friday, Clicks was given the go-ahead to offer the vaccine at 47 sites and pending approval roll out the vaccines across the other 520 clinics across the country.
Pfizer vaccine
The vaccine on offer at the two pharmacies is the Pfizer-BioNTech which tested 95% effective at preventing laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 illness in people without evidence of a previous infection.
Clinical trials for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine included people from the following racial and ethnic, age, and sex categories:
- 81.9% White
- 9.8% African American
- 4.4% Asian
The Pfizer vaccine is said to be effective against new variants of the coronavirus discovered in Britain and South Africa.
