Alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has withdrawn his plea agreement with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in his fraud and corruption case.
Matlala appeared before the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday, 13 July 2026, where he had been expected to formalise a plea deal that would have seen him serve an eight-year prison sentence.
As part of the proposed agreement, Matlala had agreed to become a State witness against senior police officials implicated in the Medicare24 corruption scandal in exchange for a reduced sentence.
The plea deal came under scrutiny earlier this month when Magistrate Ignatius du Preez indicated that Matlala deserved a sentence of more than eight years.
Instead, the magistrate proposed an effective 12-year prison sentence.
Explaining his reasoning, Du Preez said corruption had robbed South Africans of economic growth, employment opportunities, functioning public institutions and proper service delivery.
Following the magistrate’s remarks, Matlala withdrew the plea agreement and will now stand trial.
Matlala faces charges relating to alleged corruption involving the R360 million Police South African Police Service (SAPS) contract. He is currently being held at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria.
The matter has been postponed to September for further pre-trial proceedings.
Meanwhile, the State said it is ready to proceed with the prosecution but described Matlala’s decision as a significant setback, as it had hoped to conclude the matter through the plea agreement.
