Corruption-accused police brigadier Rachel Matjeng has been dismissed from the South African Police Service (SAPS) after being found guilty in an internal disciplinary process over misconduct linked to alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
Her dismissal follows the conclusion of a disciplinary hearing in which she was found guilty on multiple counts of serious misconduct arising from her relationship with Matlala.
The charges on which Matjeng was found guilty include:
- Accepting gratification.
- Money laundering.
- Improper conduct by allegedly advising Matlala against the interests of the South African Police Service.
- Conduct prejudicial to the administration of SAPS by allegedly providing Matlala with a list containing details of SAPS members with the intention of deriving a financial benefit.
- Dishonesty.
Matjeng is also among the police officials implicated in the controversial Medicare24 tender scandal, which has seen at least 17 police officers get arrested.
Meanwhile, Matlala is accused of playing a central role in alleged irregularities surrounding the multi-million-rand South African Police Service (SAPS) tender awarded to his company, Medicare24 Tshwane District.
The contract has been at the centre of allegations of corruption, fraud and improper influence.
Matlala has since entered into a plea agreement with the State after pleading guilty to fraud, corruption and money laundering charges.
As part of the agreement, he is expected to testify against some of the police officials implicated in the Medicare24 tender scandal.
Matjeng’s relationship with Matlala
Earlier this year, Brigadier Matjeng admitted to having an on-and-off romantic relationship with Matlala.
She described their relationship as an open secret among those close to her but maintained that she played no role in the awarding of the Medicare24 tender to Matlala’s company.
