- The case against alleged crime boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his four co-accused has been postponed to Wednesday, 17 June 2026, following legal delays.
- The group faces 25 charges, including 11 counts of attempted murder linked to high-profile shooting incidents, money laundering, and fraud.
- Despite the ongoing pre-trial delays, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed the main trial remains scheduled to commence on 20 July 2026.
The Johannesburg High Court has postponed the case against alleged crime boss and businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his co-accused until Wednesday, following a series of legal delays during their Monday appearance.
Matlala, his wife Tsakani Matlala, Musa Kekana, and Tiego Floyd Mabusela appeared in court, whilst the fifth accused, Nthabiseng Nzama, was absent.
The group faces 25 charges, including 11 counts of attempted murder stemming from three separate shooting incidents between August 2022 and January 2024.
The State alleges the accused orchestrated the hits, laundered the funds involved, and used fraudulent invoices to mislead the court.
Matlala is specifically linked to the failed assassination of his former girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane, and the shootings of taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni and music producer DJ Vetteys.
Monday’s proceedings were stalled by multiple legal developments.
Matlala’s legal team announced plans to compel the State to hand over outstanding case particulars, whilst Nzama is seeking to make new representations to the National Director of Public Prosecutions after a previous bid was rejected.
Furthermore, Acting Judge William Karam allowed Kekana’s defence counsel to withdraw, ordering that the incoming attorney be supplied with the necessary digital evidence.
Addressing the custody and welfare status of the accused, Acting Judge Karam ordered:
“In respect of accused number two, the J7 is to be endorsed to the effect that accused number two is as soon as possible to receive the necessary medical attention pertaining to his eyes. Accused one, two, and three are to remain in custody. Accused number four, you are on bail. Your bail is extended until that date and you are warned to appear.”
Despite these procedural hurdles, NPA Gauteng spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole previously confirmed that the State remains fully prepared to proceed when the trial officially begins on 20 July 2026.
