The Gauteng Provincial Government has handed over 318 newly constructed houses to beneficiaries at the Droogeheuwel Mega Project within the Rand West Local Municipality.
Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara, led the official handover ceremony on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in the province’s ongoing initiative to accelerate housing delivery and expand access to secure property ownership.
Rand West Local Municipality Executive Mayor, William Matsheke, congratulated the new homeowners, describing the properties as valuable assets capable of generating generational wealth.
He assured residents that the local government remains dedicated to developing the necessary surrounding infrastructure, including schools, medical clinics, and police stations. The event carried deep emotional significance for many recipients, including 56-year-old Nompumelelo Mofokeng, who finally received her keys after waiting nearly three decades since her initial application in 1996.
In line with recent directives from the Auditor-General, MEC Motara emphasised that the department is actively strengthening its vetting processes to ensure state accommodation is only allocated to qualifying applicants.

She further urged the new residents to maintain their properties diligently and to engage with municipal authorities regarding local service payments or indigent support programmes.
Stressing that these free government-funded properties are meant to provide immediate stability for families rather than commercial gain, Motara stated:
“Today, we are handing over 318 houses to rightful beneficiaries at the Droogeheuwel Mega Project. We thank residents for their patience throughout this process. These homes are intended to provide families with a safe and secure place to live and build a future for their children. They are not meant for leasing or rental purposes.”
