Gauteng emergency services (EMS) personnel have gathered at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Johannesburg to march against the recent attacks on crew members in the province.
Health officials and unions are calling on the public to work with them to stop these attacks on EMS personnel.
Kaya 959 News reporter Nosipho Radebe is on the scene at the march, where the workers are striking, with hopes to hand over a memorandum to the Department of Health.
The EFF’s Acting Chairperson in Gauteng Itani Mukwevho addressed the striking EMS staff and raised concern over the recent spike in attacks on emergency personnel.
He made reference to the incident at Dukathole informal settlement, in the province where EMS were called to assist and were shot and wounded.

Two years ago, the City of Johannesburg was criticized for withdrawing emergency services from Cosmo City, after three paramedics were attacked, and the ambulance damaged.
This could be the stance the city takes again should communities fail to stop senseless attacks on EMS workers.
Attacks on EMS personnel are not isolated to Gauteng, in December 2020 the Western Cape reported 68 attacks on EMS workers.
