- Tshwane has submitted an application to National Treasury to blacklist Edwin Sodi from doing business with the city.
- The move follows pressure from the DA and allegations linked to the incomplete Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant and the 2023 Hammanskraal cholera outbreak. Mayor Nasiphi Moya says the city is committed to accountability and justice for affected communities.
The Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Nasiphi Moya, says the city has finally submitted an application to Treasury to blacklist Edwin Sodi from doing any business with the city.
This comes amid mounting pressure from the opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), which claims the city is dragging its feet in the process of blocking the controversial businessman.
Sodi and his associates were awarded the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant, which was meant to serve the community of Hammanskraal. Tshwane awarded Sodi and his associates the R292-million tender; however, the work was not completed.
Furthermore, it is alleged that the treatment plant is one of the contributing factors to the deadly 2023 cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal.
Moya says the city has also exercised its own powers to restrict Edwin Sodi and his associated companies from doing business with the city.
“This submission is an important step for the residents of Hammanskraal, who deserve not only clean and reliable water, but accountability for the failures that led to the crisis they suffered.
“The City recognises the real and lasting impact that the collapse of the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant had on families and communities,” she said.
Moya says Tshwane will continue to hold companies that fail the city accountable and ensure they never get to do that again.
“This submission to National Treasury forms part of that commitment to accountability and justice,” Moya added.
