A listener shares that she has been dating her boyfriend for four years, but he never consults her on financial decisions. Last year he bought a car without saying a word. More recently, he purchased a house and still did not tell her.
When she raised the issue, he responded that it was his money and he saw no need to consult her about his purchases.
Although Anonymous understands that they are not married, she is beginning to wonder if there is a future for her and her boyfriend.
“l’ve been with my boyfriend for 4 years. Last year, he bought a car without telling me; I only found out the day he went to fetch it. A few weeks ago, I discovered he had also bought a house, again without saying a word.
“When I asked why he doesn’t involve me in such big financial decisions, he said he doesn’t see the need to consult me since it’s his money. This really hurt me, because whenever I make big financial decisions, I always tell him. I can’t help but feel sidelined.
“My mother says I shouldn’t be offended; these are conversations between a wife and a husband. This added salt to the wound. I feel my mom was projecting, as I am also still unmarried in my early thirties.
“Anyway, after four years, there should be some level of trust where he shares these things with me. Or are such conversations only meant for a wife, not a girlfriend? Yes, it’s his money and he can do as he pleases, but if we’ve been planning to get married, shouldn’t openness start now? What could be my blind spot here?”
