The Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela spoke to Point of View with Phemelo Motene and confirmed that stability has been restored at Maponya Mall following a week of protests and unrest.
The community outrage stemmed from the fatal shooting of a 27-year-old e-hailing driver, Mthokozisi Mvelase, at a designated pickup point. Two other drivers were also injured in the attack.
In an effort to de-escalate the situation, which had led to the mall’s temporary closure and blockaded entrances, Diale-Tlabela visited the site. She held direct talks with local e-hailing operators, taxi drivers, and mall management.
“We now have things under control,” Diale-Tlabela said after meeting with the Soweto e-hailers’ organisation.
“Calm has been restored, and the mall management has agreed to reopen.”
She emphasised that law enforcement presence has been increased to ensure public safety and that lawlessness will not be tolerated. The MEC urged the community to allow businesses to resume and for residents to have access to essential services.
