- Two suspects have reportedly been arrested in connection with the incident.
- The ANC in Ekurhuleni has condemned the act, calling it a violation of human rights and an attack on essential services.
Tragedy struck Germiston on Tuesday when a Home Affairs building in the heart of the city was set alight.
Protesters in the area allegedly torched the double-storey offices of the Department of Home Affairs. The unrest is believed to have been sparked by residents from Pharoe Park, who were reportedly protesting against eviction for allegedly being illegal occupiers and failing to pay rent.
Two suspects have since been arrested in connection with the incident.
The ANC in Ekurhuleni has condemned the attack, describing it as the destruction of a national key point.
“The deliberate destruction of such an important public office is tantamount to a violation of human rights and an attack on the state’s capacity to deliver essential services to its citizens,” the organisation said in a statement, calling for the crime to be treated with the utmost seriousness.
Home Affairs Minister, Leon Schreiber said those who are responsible for this heinous act will face the might of the law.
Home Affairs is collating evidence and will open criminal charges against the anarchists who set a block of flats on fire in Germiston, which then spread to the neighbouring Home Affairs office. It is nothing less than an attack on our social infrastructure and cannot stand.
