- The National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola, says the political killings task team has made significant progress since explosive allegations by KZN Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
- Recent arrests include suspects in the murders of DA councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, ANC Youth League leader Sindiso Magaqa, and Pretoria music producer DJ Sumbody.
- Mkhwanazi previously accused suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of trying to disband the task team to shield politicians linked to criminal syndicates.
National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has acknowledged significant progress made by the task team investigating political killings, following explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Speaking to the media at the Union Buildings after the swearing-in ceremony of acting Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia, Masemola confirmed that the team has made strides in recent weeks, especially in KwaZulu-Natal.
This comes after a series of arrests, including two suspects linked to the murder of DA councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, and the recent apprehension of a municipal manager accused of masterminding the killing of ANC Youth League leader Sindiso Magaqa.
Four men were also arrested in connection with the murder of Pretoria music producer Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka.
Last month, Commissioner Mkhwanazi stunned the country by alleging that the task team was nearly disbanded because it was getting too close to powerful political figures and criminal syndicates in Gauteng.
He implicated the now-suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
