A 25-year-old Brazilian national has been arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport after she was found in possession of cocaine valued at an estimated value of R4.2 million.
The suspect, who had arrived in South Africa from São Paulo, Brazil via Doha, Qatar, was intercepted on Tuesday by a multi-disciplinary team that included the Border Management Authority and other crime-fighting units.
According to police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk, a search of the woman’s luggage uncovered approximately 10 kilograms of cocaine.
The trafficker was also taken for a medical examination to determine whether cocaine-filled bullets had been swallowed.
Authorities say this arrest forms part of ongoing intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling transnational drug syndicates.
Since the beginning of the year, more than 25 drug traffickers have been arrested at this port of entry.
This latest breakthrough comes just a month after a Nigerian national was arrested at the same airport with 70 bullets suspected to be filled with cocaine.
The Brazilian woman is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court soon.
