- Kenny Kunene resigns as Transport MMC and PA councillor.
- Kunene’s resignation comes days after police found him at the home of DJ Sumbody’s alleged killers.
- The Patriotic Alliance has launched its internal investigations into Kunene amid corruption allegations.
Controversial politician Kenny Kunene has resigned with immediate effect as the MMC for Transport and Roads in the City of Johannesburg, as well as a councillor for the Patriotic Alliance (PA).
Kunene’s resignation, confirmed on Saturday, comes in the wake of allegations linking him to Katiso Molefe, a suspect in the murder of popular musician DJ Sumbody.
Earlier this week, police found Kunene at Molefe’s home while arresting the suspect.
Following the incident, the PA suspended Kunene from his role as Deputy President and launched an internal investigation into the matter.
Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero was expected to present the findings of the investigation to the public on Friday, following pressure from the Democratic Alliance.
Despite the controversy, Kunene maintains his innocence, insisting he has done nothing wrong.
In his resignation letter, directed to Dada Morero, Kunene said :
I am stepping aside from public life for a period, while my party satisfies itself as to certain allegations that have been levelled against me, which are unfounded, but I have agreed it would be in the public interest for me to await the clearing of my name before considering a return to public service and duty.
