Five suspects believed to be involved in cash-in-transit (CIT) robberies have been shot and killed following a fierce shootout with police in the Crown Mines area of Johannesburg. Firearms were recovered at the scene.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni confirmed that the incident was the result of a meticulously planned, intelligence-led operation conducted jointly by law enforcement teams from KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

Lt-Gen Mthombeni stated that the deceased suspects were heavily armed and are thought to be linked to a series of other cash-in-transit heists. He elaborated that the vehicle the suspects were using matched one previously implicated in criminal activities in KwaZulu-Natal.
“Based on the vehicle they are driving, this vehicle has been linked with the previous crime scene,” As I have indicated, in KwaZulu-Natal on the 14th [of the month], there was an attempted murder and cash-in-transit heist, and this vehicle is the same that was seen on the other crime scene.” Mthombeni explained.
