The Office of the Chief Justice has called on KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, to submit evidence supporting the serious allegations he recently made against senior police officials and members of the judiciary, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
During a press briefing on Sunday, 6 July 2025, Mkhwanazi made explosive claims alleging collusion between elements of the judiciary and criminal networks.
He further accused political figures of interfering in police investigations, asserting that Minister Mchunu had disbanded the Political Killings Task Team despite its reported successes.
Mkhwanazi also alleged that certain leaders were shielding politically connected individuals from prosecution and using state resources to target whistleblowers.
He claimed that Minister Mchunu obstructed efforts by the task team to arrest suspects linked to political killings in Gauteng.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 10 July, the Acting Secretary-General of the Office of the Chief Justice confirmed that Mkhwanazi has been asked to provide credible evidence or to lodge a formal complaint with the appropriate oversight bodies.
Chief Justice Mandisa Maya emphasised that any substantiated claims of unlawful or unethical conduct by members of the judiciary must be reported to the constitutionally mandated institutions for investigation and accountability.
Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation on Sunday, 13 July, regarding Mkhwanazi’s allegations of political interference in criminal investigations.
