The South African government has voiced profound apprehension regarding the recent intensification of hostilities between the State of Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The latest reports indicate that the exchange of strikes between Israel and Iran has continued for a fifth consecutive day, escalating the conflict to an unprecedented level.
Explosions have been reported in Tehran, while air raid sirens have sounded in Israeli cities including Tel Aviv and Haifa.
The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) confirmed on Sunday that the two nations have exchanged attacks in recent days, resulting in tragic loss of life, numerous casualties, and significant property damage.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the peoples of both nations suffering from the tragic loss of life,” DIRCO stated.
Pretoria underscored the critical importance of international humanitarian law, reiterating that “civilians and civilian infrastructure must never be considered legitimate targets.”
The South African government has issued an urgent appeal for de-escalation, restraint, and strict adherence to international law by all parties involved, emphasising the need to prevent further human suffering in the region.
