Liam Jacobs, a prominent former Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance (DA), has made a high-profile switch to the Patriotic Alliance (PA), led by Gayton McKenzie.
The move, which has sent ripples through the South African political landscape, comes just days after a heated exchange in Parliament between Jacobs and McKenzie during a portfolio committee session.
Jacobs, who rose through the ranks of the DA’s student wing, was seen publicly donning PA attire shortly after reports of his defection emerged.
The Patriotic Alliance, a member of South Africa’s Government of National Unity, has warmly welcomed Jacobs into its fold.

The PA is known for its firm stances on issues such as immigration, the reintroduction of the death penalty, and economic reform, under the leadership of the outspoken and populist McKenzie.
While no official statements have been released by either the DA or Jacobs, the PA has issued a short statement celebrating the arrival of what they described as “a courageous young leader unafraid to take a stand.”
This defection marks a notable shift in the political affiliations of a once-rising star within the DA.
