The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) announced today, Thursday, May 29, 2025, that it has filed an urgent application in the Western Cape High Court.
The party is seeking an interdict against Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana to prevent a planned increase in the fuel levy, scheduled to take effect on June 4, 2025.
The proposed increase, announced in the 2025 Budget Speech, would see petrol prices rise by 16 cents per litre and diesel by 15 cents per litre.
In a statement released today, the EFF detailed its efforts to avert the levy hike, stating,
“We took this action after repeated efforts to caution the Minister and appeal to his conscience failed.”
The party had previously written to Godongwana, highlighting the potential burden on South Africa’s impoverished and working-class citizens, particularly amidst a deepening cost-of-living crisis.
The EFF also reiterated its argument that increasing the fuel levy without introducing a proper Money Bill is unlawful and bypasses parliamentary oversight, drawing parallels to the recently defeated VAT hike. According to the party, the Minister appears determined to implement the fuel levy increase despite parliamentary rejection of the VAT hike.
“The same constitutional, economic, and procedural reasons that led to the rejection of the VAT increase also apply to the fuel levy increase,” the EFF statement read, adding that this might not be “immediately obvious to majority of political parties in Parliament and those who made submissions during public hearings on the 2025 Fiscal Framework and Revenue Proposals in Parliament.”
