Elon Musk has officially stepped down from his role within Donald Trump’s administration.
This departure comes just a day after Musk publicly criticised a key legislative initiative championed by the US President.
Musk joined the Trump administration in January of this year as a “special federal employee” following Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States.
Their collaboration stemmed from Musk’s notable support for the Republican party leading up to the election, which reportedly fostered a friendship between the two.
This partnership led to the formation of the Department of Government Efficiency, widely known as DOGE.
Musk confirmed his exit on X, stating:
“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.
Musk’s tenure leaves a significant mark, as DOGE’s ambitious plan to slash $150 billion from the federal government resulted in 2.3 million federal civilian employees losing their jobs, some of whom were reportedly terminated in error.
